If you’re looking for a beach with a bit of magic and hint of romance, then you may want to book that airline ticket to Sardinia. In the 60’s when there were few resorts on this island, the astute Aga Khan began buying up seafront property. Since then it has blossomed into one of the top secret hideaways for the rich and famous. "Shhh...don’t tell anyone."
This once bucolic island has become one of the hottest beach destinations in Europe. But the real secret is, that tucked in amongst all those high-end spas for the notables and quotables, there are reasonably priced lodgings for us mere mortals. How can you beat that? The best beaches in Europe at bargain prices, and in a good neighborhood. How long can it last? Better book now.
While there many great Italian beaches, Sardinian beaches are the world class ones. For example, just off Sardinia's northern coast there are a number of sparsely inhabited islets with beaches that appear to be from another world. Among these are Cala Capocchia Purpu with white sand, huge boulders and crystal water. Cala Soraia exhibits a similar limpid clarity and quiet peacefulness.
If you’d like to give your modest holiday a jet-set aura, try one of Sardinia's beaches along the Emerald Coast. To feign royalty, relax with your entourage at Spiaggia del Principe, which translates - 'Prince‘s Beach'. Or recline on Liscia Ruia, a white sand beach sprinkled with a rose hue - just to please your majesty.
But if "uneasy lies the head that wears the crown", then make your escape south along the coast to San Teodoro. Here, lush green landscapes, dramatic cliffs and picturesque islets will ease those endless dreams of battles fought to win the throne.
Only one thing is certain. Whether you arrived on a gold-plated Gulf Stream jet or by tramp steamer, you’re going to have a great vacation here on a very special Sardinian beach.
