The scent of clove hanging in the air, lithe maidens in form fitted sarongs gliding gracefully along the road with loads balanced on their heads and the ever present tintinnabulation of gamelan music rippling softly across your consciousness says: "Here am I, your special island! Come to me."
Whether or not Bali is the island envisioned by these words from the musical South Pacific, it embodies a magic that draws millions to it each year.
But Bali is not just a beautiful place to visit, it possesses a unique historical heritage as well. So you may wish to spend some of your time on its cultural attractions. What am I saying? The great beach lizard suggesting we slither off Bali's beaches to seek cultural enlightenment? I must have been out in the sun too long.
For those who opt for tanning the ol’ epiderm over cultural enrichment, there are numerous strands lining Bali's shores. Most Bali beaches are left in their natural state with bits of seaweed lying wherever the tide drops them. For those who insist on perfectly manicured beaches on which to sun their perfectly formed bod's (in your dreams), these can be found in front of the major beach resorts where the sand is groomed daily.
If you want to party, then Kuta is the place you’ll be hanging out. Here, the bronzed surf gods and goddesses go on display from dawn till dusk; then the party really starts. A veritable carnival of hedonism awaits those who wish to participate. Saying no politely is the only rule you need to keep in mind.
For those who favor a more sedate stay in paradise, move up or down the coast in either direction, north to Legian and Seminyak for quieter but modestly priced areas, or south to Jimbaran for five-star luxury. Similar laid-back areas are found eastward across Bukit Peninsula at Tanjung Benoa or Nusa Dua, or further along the coast at Sanur. Also, try a ferry trip over to Lembongan Island for the day. It’s quieter and you’ll get a more authentic glimpse of Balinese life.
